Stray dogs are a common sight on the streets of Russian cities, but with massive construction in the area the street dog population in Sochi and the Olympic park has soared. Useful as noisy, guard dogs, workers feed them to keep them nearby and protect buildings. They soon lose their value and become strays. Tonight, a few dogs will be taken on their way to a new life in Moscow. (AP Photo/David Goldman)Alexei stops in his tracks as he sees a half-breed Labrador snooping around at a cafe's back door.

U.S. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Yellen stands after testifying during a confirmation hearing on her nomination to be the next chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve before the Senate Banking Committee in WashingtonBy Jonathan Spicer and Jason Lange WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Janet Yellen, fresh from taking the helm of the Federal Reserve, made it clear on Tuesday she would not make any abrupt changes to U.S. monetary policy, saying the central bank was on track to keep reducing its stimulus even though the labor market recovery was far from complete. In her first public comments since becoming Fed chief earlier this month, Yellen said the central bank must keep its eye on the "unusually high" incidence of long-term unemployment and the "exceptionally high" proportion of Americans who can find only part-time work as it plots a tricky reversal of its very accommodative policy stance. "By a number of measures our economy is not back, the labor market is not back, to normal," she told the U.S. House of Representatives' Financial Services Committee. Fielding sharp questions from some Republican lawmakers, Yellen emphasized continuity with the policy approach taken by her predecessor, Ben Bernanke.
