Iraq's Kurds say Maliki's crazy, and has to resign

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 09:02 AM PDT

Iraqi security forces stand guard at the entrance to Basra on July 10, 2014Iraq's Kurds said Thursday Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was "hysterical" and not fit to run the country, further dimming the prospect of a new leadership uniting to face jihadist fighters. The worsening political discord comes three days ahead of a planned parliamentary session meant to revive the process of replacing what has effectively been a caretaker government since April elections. Maliki "has become hysterical and has lost his balance", a statement from the office of Kurdish regional president Massud Barzani said, reacting to accusations by the prime minister a day earlier that his administration was harbouring militants. Maliki has accused Barzani of exploiting the chaos created by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group's military offensive, but the Kurdish president said the security collapse was of the premier's own making.

plaintiffs in a gay-marriage case in Brighton, Colo.By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - A state judge struck down Colorado's gay marriage ban on Wednesday, saying the prohibition violated constitutional rights, but put his ruling on hold pending appeal. Adams County District Court Judge C. Scott Crabtree said in his decision that Colorado's prohibition, approved by voters in 2006, conflicted with the fundamental right to marry. Several other same-sex marriage lawsuits are moving toward the U.S. Supreme Court. The attorney general of neighboring Utah said on Wednesday he would appeal directly to the Supreme Court a ruling by a federal appeals court last month that backed gay marriage in the conservative, largely Mormon state.

Residents and medical officials said an Israeli air strike bombed at least two houses in a densely populated area near Khan Younis while residents were asleep. Bodies were pulled out of rubble from three or four homes including neighboring structures, and the Palestinian Health Ministry said five of the dead were children. Joni Ernst: Boehner should pursue Obama impeachment if he has evidence

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 12:52 PM PDT

Iowa Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst waded back into controversial waters in June when, during a conversation with a conservative radio host, she again discussed impeaching President Barack Obama. In January, Ernst had suggested that "impeachment" should be on the table if the Supreme Court decided against Obama on the question of recess appointments, which it later did. But Ernst walked back her comments on Tuesday after they were reported by Yahoo News and other media outlets, saying she herself was not calling for the second-term president to be removed from office over his power struggle with the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Now it turns out that impeachment is something Ernst also discussed on a June 27 episode of the "Simon Conway Show." Her remarks on the conservative talk radio program, taped in Des Moines, showcase the tightrope Republican candidates can be forced walk on conservative programs directed at their voter base. Issues seen as far outside the political mainstream, such as impeachment, can quickly become the hot topics of the day in highly charged partisan environments, opening up candidates to awkward and potentially problematic lines of questioning.
