Ella Polyakova and Sergei Krivenko, both members of the council, said around 300 people were also injured in the violence on Aug. 13 near the town of Snizhnye in Donetsk Province, when a column of trucks full of ammunition they were driving was hit by a sustained volley of Grad missiles. "A column of Russian soldiers was attacked by Grad rockets and more 100 people died. Polyakova said she had also been given the same figure, of more than 100, for the number of Russian soldiers killed in the attack.

| More bad news for Malaysia Airlines Posted: 28 Aug 2014 10:27 AM PDT Crisis-stricken Malaysia Airlines said Thursday its second-quarter loss nearly doubled and forecast more red ink in the second half of the year, as two crippling air disasters sent passenger bookings tumbling. The latest results mark the sixth straight quarterly loss for Malaysia Airlines (MAS), which has struggled to stay competitive and is now in dire financial straits following the loss of MH370 and the July 18 shooting down over Ukraine of flight MH17, which killed all 298 aboard that plane. "The full financial impact of the double tragedies of MH370 and MH17 is expected to hit Malaysia Airlines in the second half of the year, where we saw a sharp decline in average weekly bookings by 33 percent immediately after the MH17 incident, with numerous flights cancelled," it said. MAS has bled money for years, losing a combined $1.3 billion over the past three calendar years before 2014, as intensifying competition from more nimble rivals like Malaysia's fast-growing budget carrier AirAsia have lured away travellers with their rock-bottom pricing.

| Australia says MH370 'may have turned south earlier than thought' Posted: 28 Aug 2014 01:43 AM PDT The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will focus on the southern part of the existing search zone after a new clue to the plane's possible location emerged, Australia said on Thursday. Fresh information suggested the jet "may have turned south" earlier than thought, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said. "The search area remains the same, but some of the information that we now have suggests to us that areas a little further to the south -- within the search area, but a little further to the south -- are of particular interest and priority in the search area," he said. His comments came as Australia and Malaysia inked a memorandum of understanding in Canberra over the next phase of the hunt for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

| Infamous: First Light review: Highlighting the heroine Posted: 28 Aug 2014 11:21 AM PDT Despite being one of the standout console exclusives of 2014, Infamous: Second Son had one egregious flaw — we never got to know any of the secondary characters. Some of the best moments of the Infamous series revolve around the interactions between the protagonist and his companions, but Sucker Punch failed to flesh out the colorful cast in Second Son. Infamous: First Light is how they're going to fill in the blanks. First Light is basically a condensed version of Second Son (…hence the name). There's the (scaled-back) open world environment, the side missions, the collectables and even the melodramatic narrative. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the story — it just doesn't have much time to breathe. First Light

The UN Security Council geared up for an emergency meeting on the crisis as European leaders warned Moscow to change course or suffer "very serious consequences." Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described the situation as "extremely difficult" but "manageable for us not to panic", as security chiefs announced that mandatory army conscription will restart in the autumn. NATO said at least 1,000 Russian troops were on the ground supporting pro-Kremlin separatists who have been fighting against Kiev's rule since April.

| Hamas will refuse to disarm: Meshaal Posted: 28 Aug 2014 11:13 AM PDT Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal on Thursday rejected any attempt to disarm his Palestinian Islamist movement in Gaza as demanded by Israel, saying the group's weapons were "sacred". "The weapons of the resistance are sacred and we will not accept that they be on the agenda" of future negotiations with Israel, Meshaal told a news conference in Doha where he lives in exile. Israel has consistently linked the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, devastated during its 50-day war with Hamas that ended on Tuesday, to the territory's demilitarisation. No one can disarm Hamas and its resistance," he said of the Palestinian fighters.

| Argentines strike over ailing economy Posted: 28 Aug 2014 11:12 AM PDT Argentine workers launched a general strike Thursday to protest rising unemployment and runaway inflation, adding to President Cristina Kirchner's headaches as her government deals with a new debt default. Union members and radical activists barricaded the major roads into Buenos Aires and blocked buses and taxis whose drivers were not observing the strike, the second in less than five months. The streets of Buenos Aires were quiet but not empty, with buses and taxis running, as well as half the capital's six subway lines. The strike was called in protest over rising joblessness -- the unemployment rate is currently 7.5 percent, up 1.1 points so far this year -- and 30-percent annual inflation that has gutted workers' salaries.
