"The families of the detainees have been informed by the International Red Cross (ICRC) that their loved ones have been handed over to the Pakistani authorities," a statement by the Justice Project Pakistan (JPP), which has been pursuing Islamabad to secure their release, said. It described one of the nine men as a 39-year-old businessman from the northwestern city of Abbottabad, who disappeared on a visit to Afghanistan in 2008.

U.S. WENT IN TO RESCUE FOLEYBy Kate Holton and William James LONDON (Reuters) - British Muslim leaders urged people to contact police if they knew the identity of the man with an English accent who appeared in a video showing the beheading of an American journalist. The Muslim Council of Britain, the largest Muslim umbrella group in the country, condemned the "abhorrent murder" of James Foley in Syria and called for united action by Muslims to stop the "poison of extremism" infiltrating their communities. Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday it looked increasingly likely that the man in the Islamic State video was British, one of hundreds who have traveled to Syria to fight. "We are horrified at the abhorrent murder of James Foley, a reporter who initially went to the region to expose the human rights abuses of the Syrian regime." Iqbal Sacranie, an adviser to the council, told London's Evening Standard newspaper that anyone who recognized the man had a duty to contact police.

Senior Hamas official says group abducted Israeli teens

Combination photo of three Israeli teenagers abducted in the occupied West BankBy Noah Browning RAMALLAH West Bank (Reuters) - A top Hamas official said members of his militant group kidnapped three Israeli teenagers whose deaths in June provoked a spiral of violence that led to the war in Gaza, the first acknowledgement of the movement's involvement. Hamas, which controls Gaza, has up to now refused to confirm or deny Israeli accusations that it masterminded the abduction and killing of the three young men, one of them a joint U.S.-Israeli citizen, in Hebron. "The popular will was exercised throughout our occupied land, and culminated in the heroic operation by the Qassam Brigades in imprisoning the three settlers in Hebron," he said, referring to Hamas's armed wing. Jewish seminary students Eyal Yifrach, 19, and Gilad Shaer and Naftali Fraenkel, both 16, were abducted while hitchhiking in the Israeli occupied West Bank on June 12 and killed.

Foley death underlines Western agony of ransom payment

Posted: 21 Aug 2014 10:38 AM PDT

US freelance reporter James Foley in Aleppo on November 5, 2012James Foley's beheading underscores the agonising dilemma governments face in hostage situations: paying a ransom that funds kidnappers and encourages more hostage-taking or refusing and risking the US journalist's fate. For a long time, the United States and Britain have refused to allow any money to change hands while other European countries -- including France -- have paid up, although this is officially denied. A source who took part in efforts to free James Foley, who did not wish to be identified, said that after months of uncertainty over his whereabouts, the hostage's family received a letter demanding an unrealistic ransom of $100 million (75 million euros). We saw that recently in Afghanistan where they freed Guantanamo prisoners in exchange for their captured soldier," said Alain Chouet, a former top official at France's DGSE external intelligence service.
