Posted: 12 Nov 2014 09:24 AM PST

The SolaRoad, the first road in the world made of solar panels, is launched in Krommenie, the Netherlands, on November 12, 2014The Netherlands on Wednesday unveiled the world's first solar bike path, a revolutionary project to harvest the sun's energy that could eventually also be used on roads. The so-called "SolaRoad" bike path is made of concrete modules each measuring 2.5 by 3.5 metres (eight by 11 feet), embedded with solar panels covered in tempered glass. The solar cells currently put the electricity they generate onto the national grid, but future plans include using the energy to power street lights. Electric bikes and cars will one day be able to refuel using contactless charging directly from the road or bike path, said Sten de Wit, a physicist who helped develop the project.

At least a dozen women died this week following a state-run, mass sterilization program that has raised serious ethical questions about India's drive to curb a booming population by paying women to undergo tubectomies. India has one of the world's highest rates of sterilization among women, with about 37 percent undergoing such operations compared with 29 percent in China, according to 2006 statistics reported by the United Nations. About 4.6 million Indian women were sterilized in 2011 and 2012, according to the government. (AP Photo/Rajesh Kumar Singh)By Aditya Kalra RAIPUR India (Reuters) - The scene in the gloomy room where 83 women were sterilized last weekend is repeated routinely at makeshift contraception clinics across India: bloodstained sheets that aren't changed between patients, and hasty two-minute surgeries. Only this time, something went tragically wrong. More than a dozen of the mostly poor and illiterate villagers operated on by Dr. R.K. Gupta have since died, and scores remain sick in hospital, many of them in intensive care. ...
