Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party claims in a contentious new campaign ad that a vote for the left in Israel's March election would benefit jihadists from the Islamic State group. The ad drew fire from the left-wing coalition opposing Likud, the Zionist Union, which accused Netanyahu of "colossal" security failures. The Zionist Union, formed in December as an electoral alliance of Israel's Labour Party and the centre-left Hatnuah, denounced the ad and "the colossal failure of Benjamin Netanyahu in the field of security". Security will be a key issue in Israel's March 17 general election, which was called early after the collapse of Netanyahu's ruling coalition.

By Alwyn Scott NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. aviation regulator proposed rules on Sunday for flying drones for commercial purposes that would lift some restrictions but would still limit activities such as inspections of pipelines that have been eyed by companies as a potentially breakthrough use of the technology. The long-awaited draft rules from the Federal Aviation Administration governing use of unmanned aircraft require pilots to obtain special pilot certificates, stay away from bystanders and fly only during the day. The rules also say aircraft must remain in the line of sight of its radio-control pilot, which could limit inspection of pipelines, crops, and electrical towers that are one of the major uses envisioned by companies. The FAA acknowledged the limitation but said those flights could be made possible with a secondary spotter working with the pilot of the drone.

Blizzards forced the cancellation of more than 1,750 U.S. passenger flights, most of them into and out of airports in Boston and New York, where gusts of up to 60 miles per hour (97 kph) were predicted. The temperature at 1 p.m. in Boston was around 18 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8 Celsius), but felt like zero (minus 18 Celsius) thanks to wind chill. Bruce Sullivan of the National Weather Service (NWS) said temperatures were 25 to 30 degrees below normal.

(Reuters) - Las Vegas police on Sunday were looking for a man suspected of shooting a mother of four to death outside her home in an alleged road range incident. Tammy Meyers, 44, died on Saturday night from a gunshot wound, family members said at a press conference outside a hospital where she was taken off life support two days after being shot. "There was no excuse, no reason and I hope to God they know we're looking and they will be caught," a cousin, Susan Ramos, said at the press conference also attended by Meyers' husband and at least one adult son. Meyers was at the wheel after giving her daughter a driving lesson at a school parking lot when she had a near-collision with another vehicle, said the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in a news release.
