U.S. gunman kills three young Muslims; parking spat cited

(Reuters) - A gunman who had posted anti-religious messages on Facebook was charged with killing three young Muslims in what police said on Wednesday was a dispute over parking and possibly a hate crime. Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, of Chapel Hill, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shootings around 5 p.m. on Tuesday near the University of North Carolina campus. The victims are newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, a University of North Carolina dental student, and his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and Yusor's sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19.All were involved in humanitarian aid programs. Muslim activists demanded that authorities investigate a possible motive of religious hatred for the killings.

Opening statements began in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, 27, charged with murdering Kyle, who was credited with the most kills of any U.S. sniper, as well as Kyle's friend and neighbor Chad Littlefield in February 2013 at a shooting range about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Fort Worth. While riding in the truck, Kyle sent a text message to Littlefield, who was sitting next to him in front, about Routh, sitting in back. Erath County District Attorney Alan Nash said evidence shows that Routh shot the two men multiple times in the back and stole the truck and weapons, knowing it was wrong.

"It's been the honor of my professional life, and I thank you for watching it, for hate-watching it, whatever reason you are tuning in for." The announcement came after Comedy Central's other big name, former "Daily Show" contributor Stephen Colbert, ended his tenure as star of companion show "The Colbert Report" and left the network in December to succeed the retiring David Letterman as host of the "Late Show" on CBS. The New York-based "The Daily Show," which airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on the Viacom Inc-owned Comedy Central, is expected to continue, the network said, but a replacement for Stewart has yet to be named.
