US arrests suicide bomb suspect in Kansas: Justice DeptThe US Justice Department said Friday it arrested an Islamic State sympathizer who was plotting to carry out a suicide bomb attack on a US military base in Kansas. John T. Booker Jr, 20, is charged with "attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction... attempting to damage property by means of an explosive and one count of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant," the Justice Department said. Booker was arrested earlier Friday near the Kansas city of Manhattan "as he made his final preparations for his planned assault" on nearby Fort Riley, the US Attorney for Kansas, Barry Grissom, told reporters in Kansas City.

Purple Heart ceremonyBy Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Dozens of people who survived a 2009 shooting rampage at the Fort Hood U.S. Army base in central Texas and relatives of those who were killed received Purple Heart and Defense of Freedom medals on Friday after years of lobbying by politicians and lawyers. In February, the U.S. Army cleared the way for the military and civilian distinctions after the shooting was declared an act of international terrorism.. Nearly 50 awards were handed out at the base. In addition to the medals, the awards also confer additional benefits, from Veterans Health Administration health care and combat-related special compensation to burial privileges at Arlington National Cemetery, lawyers for the group have said. Of our honorees, it can truly be said that all gave some and some gave al on that terrible day," Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland, the commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood, said at the ceremony.

Booker, Jr., 20, of Topeka, Kansas, was taken into custody this morning as part of a sting operation after he and two undercover FBI agents arrived at the military base to detonate what he did not realize was an inert bomb, prosecutors said.


One dead as tornadoes sweep through northern Illinois

(Reuters) - A dangerous storm system rolled through the Midwest on Thursday evening, killing at least one person and leveling houses and businesses northwest of Chicago, local officials said. One person was killed and at least seven people were injured in the tiny town of Fairdale, Illinois, located some 75 miles (120 km) from Chicago, according to local media, citing emergency officials. Les Bellah, village president of nearby Kirkland, said that there was "extensive damage" to Fairdale, which has about 300 people. Damage was also reported in and around Rochelle, Illinois, about 81 miles (130 km) west of Chicago, according to Rochelle Councilman Bill Hayes.
