| Family of New York chokehold victim renews calls to charge officer Posted: 14 Jul 2015 10:58 AM PDT By Edward McAllister NEW YORK (Reuters) - The family of Eric Garner, a black man who died after a white police officer put him in a chokehold a year ago, renewed calls to criminally charge the police officer on Tuesday, a day after the family reached a $5.9 million settlement with New York City. A grand jury in December declined to indict the officer, Daniel Pantaleo, who placed Garner, 43, in the chokehold, a maneuver banned by the New York City Police Department. After the state grand jury declined to indict, then-U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in December promised a full investigation into Garner's death.

(Reuters) - Jurors will hear closing arguments on Tuesday in the trial of Colorado movie massacre gunman James Holmes, as they prepare to decide whether he was legally insane or a calculating mass murderer when he killed a dozen people. Prosecutors and the defense have been allotted two hours each to present their case by Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour, after testimony in the almost three-month-long capital trial ended last week. When the shooting stopped, 12 moviegoers lay dead and 70 were either wounded by gunfire or injured fleeing the theater. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Holmes if he is convicted.

| Wal-Mart sued for denying health insurance to gay worker's wife Posted: 14 Jul 2015 11:42 AM PDT A Wal-Mart Stores Inc employee sued the retailer on Tuesday, saying its prior policy of denying health insurance to the spouses of gay employees violated gender discrimination laws. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Boston, seeks nationwide class-action status. Wal-Mart, the largest private U.S. employer, began offering health insurance benefits to same-sex spouses last year, after the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013 struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to married gay couples.
