Civil rights activists, religious leaders and others from around the United States are converging on the mostly black community of about 21,000 to commemorate the life and death of 18-year-old Michael Brown and call for improvements in relations with police. The events, many organized by Brown's father, include marches, concerts and a moment of silence at midday on Sunday on the street where Brown was killed on Aug. 9, 2014. "I'm expecting hundreds if not thousands of people," said Tommie Pierson Sr., pastor of the Greater St. Mark Family Church, where a service honoring Brown is scheduled this weekend.

(Reuters) - A manhunt was under way on Thursday for the suspect in the fatal shooting of a police officer in Shreveport, Louisiana, overnight, local authorities said. Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw vowed that police would not stop looking until they apprehended the suspected shooter, identified as Grover Cannon. "No matter what rock he crawls under, we will find him," Shaw told reporters.

(Reuters) - A Tennessee man who was shot dead by police at a Nashville area-movie theater first used a hatchet to assault a family before pulling out a weapon thought to be a gun, according to a 911 call released on Thursday. The gunman was identified by Nashville police as Vincente Montano, 29, who had been committed for mental health issues four times in 2004 and 2007. In addition to the hatchet, he was carrying what turned out to be a pellet gun, as well as pepper spray that he used to douse the crowd at a showing of "Mad Max: Fury Road" on Wednesday, police said.
