A manhunt was under way on Sunday in Tennessee for a parolee suspected of fatally shooting a Memphis police officer who apparently interrupted a drug transaction when he stopped to investigate an illegally parked car, police said. The slain policeman, Sean Bolton, 33, was confronted by the gunman and shot multiple times during a brief scuffle after the officer pulled up to the parked car and shined his spotlight on the vehicle, Memphis police said in a statement. Investigators also recovered a handgun in a field near the shooting scene, the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.

A man was shot to death Monday in front of a courthouse in a suburb of Jackson, Mississippi, as he arrived for a hearing on drug charges against him, and the gunman had turned himself in to the authorities, police said. Kendrick Brown was shot at point-blank range outside the Madison County Courthouse complex in Canton, about 30 miles north of Jackson, the state capital, authorities and Brown family members said. The shooter turned himself in to police but his name and details of his relationship to the victim were not released.

The blaze, which has scorched about 54,000 acres (21,853 hectares) east of Lower Lake, a town about 110 miles (180 km) north of San Francisco, was the fiercest of 20 large fires being battled by 9,000 firefighters across the state, officials said. "This is a very fast-moving wildfire," said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, or Cal Fire.
