| Palestinians torch Jewish shrine, new protests erupt Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:24 AM PDT Palestinians torched a site revered by Jews in the West Bank in an incident that threatened to further inflame two weeks of deadly unrest, as fresh protests erupted Friday. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, under pressure over recent comments that some have labelled incitement, quickly condemned the fire at Joseph's Tomb, in the northern city of Nablus. The arson came as Palestinians called for a "Friday of revolution" against Israel, and police barred men under 40 from attending the main weekly prayers at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque, seeking to keep young protesters away.

| Democrat raps Benghazi panel on Clinton aide questioning Posted: 16 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT By Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turmoil swirled again on Friday around the Republican-controlled Benghazi committee in the U.S. House of Representatives as it began questioning a senior aide to Hillary Clinton. Huma Abedin, a close confidante for years of the Democratic presidential campaign front-runner, in the morning entered a closed-door interview of undetermined duration with the panel. After she went in, Democratic Representative and panel member Elijah Cummings came out and said summoning Abedin raised the question of whether the panel is "a taxpayer funded effort to derail the (presidential) candidacy of Hillary Clinton." He said Abedin, who is the vice-chairwoman of Clinton's campaign, had no responsibilities related to the tragedy the committee was set up to investigate.

| Why US Troops Are Staying Longer in Afghanistan Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:54 PM PDT The announcement that thousands of U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan longer than planned marks a major reversal of President Obama's goal to end both this war, as well as the war in Iraq, during his time in office. The president formally announced the policy change at the White House this morning alongside Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford. The decision comes as the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, highlighted by the Taliban's takeover of the city of Kunduz last month.
