| U.S. announces task force to develop drone registry Posted: 19 Oct 2015 11:01 AM PDT The Obama administration, faced with rising safety and security risks from a surge in unauthorized drone flights, announced a new task force on Monday to develop a new federal register for the owners of unmanned aerial systems. The task force of both private sector and government officials is charged with recommending by Nov 20 a process for drone registration that federal authorities hope to have in place before the Christmas holiday, when more than 1 million drones are expected to be purchased by consumers. "We're going to require operators of drones to register their aircraft," U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference. |
| 9/11 suspect seeks to represent himself in Guantanamo hearing Posted: 19 Oct 2015 10:25 AM PDT A pre-trial hearing for five Guantanamo Bay 9/11 suspects stalled on Monday when one of them asked how to represent himself in the death penalty case. Walid bin Attash, a Yemeni accused of running an al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan, told his attorneys that he no longer trusted them and asked the court how he might represent himself. "We have so many problems in the camp that take precedence over anything we are discussing here in the court," bin Attash said through an interpreter before the judge, Army Colonel James Pohl, silenced him due to security concerns. |
