House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is deciding whether to seek the U.S. House of Representatives' speaker job, fellow Republican lawmakers said on Friday after they met behind closed doors to try to settle their leadership battle. Speaking to reporters the day after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy abruptly dropped his bid to become speaker, Representative Darrell Issa of California said he had no second choice if Ryan sticks by his announcement on Thursday that he would not seek the post. "Although he's ruled himself out, it's very clear he's reconsidering," Issa told reporters as he exited the meeting.

An 18-year-old student killed one person and wounded three others when he opened fire during a confrontation on the campus of Northern Arizona University early on Friday before being arrested in the latest shooting to hit a U.S. school, authorities said. The suspected gunman was identified as Steven Jones, a freshman at the university, campus police chief Gregory Fowler said. Colin Brough was killed in the shooting, according to the university.

A student armed with a handgun killed another student in a "confrontation" at an Arizona university early Friday that also left three others with multiple gunshot wounds, police said, in the latest shooting at a US college. The deadly incident at Northern Arizona University (NAU) came hours before President Barack Obama was to meet families of victims of last week's shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College in Oregon that left nine people dead before the gunman killed himself. The first emergency calls came through to police at 1:20 am Friday, when most NAU students would have been in bed at the sprawling university campus in the city of Flagstaff.
