News of the missing vessel came as forecasters shifted the likely track of the powerful storm further away from the U.S. East Coast, but there were still warnings about the potential for severe flooding in the Carolinas from unrelated heavy rains. A potentially catastrophic Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 1 to 5, Joaquin turned northward on Friday and was expected to start gradually losing strength over cooler water in about 24 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

(Reuters) - The Oregon gunman who carried out an execution-style massacre at a U.S. college classroom had a cache of 13 weapons, body armor and ammunition, authorities said on Friday, as they sought a motive for the worst U.S. mass shooting this year. The disclosure of the weapons by Celinex Nunez, assistant special agent of U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agent came as fresh details emerged about the suspect in Thursday's rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. Six of the guns, plus body armor and five magazines of ammunition, were recovered from the campus where the gunman stormed into a classroom, killing nine people before he was shot dead by police, Nunez said at a press conference.

Fighting continued in other parts of the city, the seizure of which represented a major victory for the insurgents and raised questions over whether NATO-trained Afghan forces were ready to go it alone now most foreign combat troops have left. "There are military helicopters in the sky and government forces everywhere," said Abdul Ahad, a doctor in the city.
