"We are all French," Obama told Hollande, in French, after hosting him at the White House for talks on how to confront the threat posed by Islamic State. "We are here to declare that the United States and France stand united in total solidarity to deliver justice to terrorists and those who sent them, and to defend our nations," he said.

Abid Naseer, 29, had faced up to life in prison following his conviction by a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, in March on charges including that he provided material support to the Islamic militant group. Naseer, who at trial denied involvement with al Qaeda, sought leniency from U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie, saying he was "not nor have I been a career criminal." But while Dearie gave Naseer a path to leaving prison someday, he said the evidence established his guilt.

The officer, Jason Van Dyke, was denied bail at a hearing in Chicago's main criminal courthouse hours after a state prosecutor, Anita Alvarez, announced first-degree murder charges against him. Last week, a Cook County judge ordered the release of the dashcam video showing the killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.


Police arrest one in shooting of Minnesota protesters

Minneapolis police said on Tuesday they have arrested a 23-year-old white man in relation to the shooting of five people near a city police station where demonstrators have gathered for more than a week to protest the killing of an unarmed black man by officers. Minneapolis police said in a statement that the suspect, who was not identified, was arrested in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington. It occurred a block from the police station where protests have been held since the fatal Nov. 15 shooting of Jamar Clark, 24, Minneapolis police said in a statement.

France and Belgium have launched a manhunt following the attacks that killed 130 people, with a focus on Brussels barkeeper Salah Abdeslam, 26, who returned to the city from Paris hours after the attacks and is still at large. Abdeslam's mobile phone was detected after the attacks in the 18th district in the north of Paris, near an abandoned car that he had rented, and then later in Chatillon in the south, the source said on Monday.
