Six Americans were recovered safely and U.S. special forces assisted in the rescue efforts, U.S. officials said earlier. The State Department, in a statement, identified the victim as Anita Datar.

The outbreak expanded with new Chipotle-linked E. coli cases reported in California, Ohio, New York and Minnesota, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The CDC said 45 people got sick from the E. coli O26 outbreak strain, and of those, 43 reported eating at Chipotle.

Investigators were still trying to work out what happened during the assault in the Bronx, in which one woman was found with multiple stab wounds to her torso, the New York City police said. The victim appeared to have been pregnant and the baby might have been cut from her stomach, the New York Times reported, citing comments made by New York City councilman Andy King.

"Following our latest evaluation... the centre has raised its terror alert to level 4, signifying a very serious threat, for the Brussels region," it said, as Europe tightens security after Islamic State militants killed 130 people in the French capital. "The analysis shows a serious and imminent threat requiring specific security measures as well as detailed recommendations to the population," said OCAM, which is part of the Belgian interior ministry, in a statement.
